Sinach (born Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu) is not just a gospel artist; she is a global phenomenon. As the first African singer-songwriter to top the Billboard Christian Songwriter chart for 12 consecutive weeks, she has permanently reshaped the geography of modern worship music, shifting its center of gravity toward Africa.
The Genesis: A Secret Passion in Port Harcourt
Born on March 30, 1972, in Ebonyi State, Nigeria, Sinach grew up as the second of seven children. Though music was deeply encoded in her DNA, her early aspirations faced resistance. Her father initially discouraged a singing career, viewing it as a path with little future.
Adhering to her academic responsibilities, Sinach moved to Rivers State to study Physics at the University of Port Harcourt. It was during her university years that her life intersected with Believers’ Loveworld (Christ Embassy) and her spiritual mentor, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.
Under the canopy of the LoveWorld Music and Arts Ministry, Sinach’s raw vocal talent developed into a sharp spiritual tool. She became a senior worship leader, ministering to congregations of tens of thousands. To make her Igbo name, Osinachi (“It comes from God”), more accessible to international audiences, she shortened it to Sinach—a name that would soon echo globally.
"Way Maker" and the Billboard Breakthrough
While tracks like the highly declarative “I Know Who I Am” (2013) and “The Name of Jesus” established her as an African powerhouse, it was a simple, profound worship ballad recorded in 2015 that catapulted her into the global stratosphere: “Way Maker.”
The song’s impact is difficult to overstate. It became a viral spiritual lifeline, particularly during global periods of isolation. The track crossed over heavily into Western contemporary Christian music (CCM), covered by prominent artists like Michael W. Smith, Leeland, Mandisa, and Passion.

Billboard History (2020): Became the first African artist to hold the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Christian Songwriter chart, holding it for 12 weeks straight.
GMA Dove Awards (2020): Won the prestigious Song of the Year at the 51st Annual Dove Awards, making her the first Nigerian graphic winner in that category.
YouTube Landmark: “Way Maker” was the first Nigerian gospel music video to cross 100 million views, cementing her visual footprint alongside mainstream Afrobeats stars.

Her discography remains incredibly prolific. Her latest live project, Enough For Me, functions as an intentional, unhurried corporate worship journey, proving that even after three decades in ministry, her focus remains squarely on creating spaces for spiritual intimacy.
Personal Life and Humanitarian Work
In June 2014, Sinach married Dr. Joseph Egbu in Lagos. The couple, who celebrated the birth of their daughter in 2019, work in tandem both in ministry and philanthropy.
Through the Joseph and Sinach Foundation, they run large-scale medical outrages, provide free healthcare, food relief, and educational scholarships to vulnerable communities across Nigeria. Furthermore, her GosGem Mentorship Platform actively trains and prepares the next generation of Christian creatives and entrepreneurs to navigate the global stage with integrity.
Armed with a global ministry spanning more than three decades, Sinach continues to stand as a deeply influential force in contemporary praise and worship.
