Recognizing her raw vocal talent at an early age, her parents—Mr. and Mrs. J. Mbambo—provided her first platform by letting her sing in the church’s worship team.
Her life changed fundamentally in 2000. At just 15 years old, she auditioned for and joined the legendary South African gospel choir Joyous Celebration. As the youngest member of the ensemble at the time, Mbambo quickly transitioned from a backing vocalist to a powerhouse lead singer. Her soaring vocals on tracks like “Wongingcina Ngci” captivated audiences across the nation and firmly established her as the group’s breakout star.
While navigating her rapidly rising music career, Mbambo prioritized her education. She earned a degree in Information Technology Programming from Durban North Varsity College in 2006, and later graduated with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) from the University of Zululand, proving her dedication to personal development outside of the recording studio.
Going Solo and Crowned in "Lavish Worship"
Mbambo launched her solo career while still associated with Joyous Celebration, releasing her debut studio album, Bambelela, in 2001. However, it was after her official departure from the choir in 2011 that her solo ministry reached stratospheric heights.
Signing with Koko Records, she recorded her landmark live album, Filled, at the Lyric Theatre in 2012. The project was a massive commercial success, achieving Double Platinum status in South Africa and sweeping major categories at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), including Female Artist of the Year and Best Contemporary Faith Music Album.

Mbambo’s ministry transcends South African borders. Early in her career, she shared stages as an opening act for American gospel giants Yolanda Adams and CeCe Winans during their respective South African tours.
In recent years, she has focused heavily on pan-African and global collaborations, frequently working alongside Nigerian gospel general Nathaniel Bassey. Their live collaboration on “Makabongwe: The Sound of Revival” and the Before Your Throne EP have become staples in churches worldwide. She has also partnered with prominent artists such as Jonathan Butler, Joe Mettle, and Khaya Mthethwa, bridging cultural gaps through unified worship.
Personal Life and Legacy
Behind the powerful stage presence is a deeply family-oriented woman. In May 2008, Ntokozo married fellow music maestro and producer Nqubeko Mbatha, who has produced much of her solo material. Together, they operate as a formidable duo in the gospel industry, even collaborating on The Anniversary Project (2018) to celebrate their marriage and shared musical journey. Based in Johannesburg, the couple balances their busy touring schedules while raising their children.
Beyond singing, Mbambo has dedicated time to mentorship, serving as a television judge on screens across South Africa, including I Want to Sing Gospel (2014) and Idols SA (Season 17 in 2021).
